Mount Meru Climbing

Mount Meru offers a spectacular trekking experience at the core of Arusha National Park in Tanzania. Standing at 14,980 feet, it is the country’s second-highest mountain and the fifth-highest in Africa. From its slopes, climbers enjoy striking vistas of nearby Mount Kilimanjaro. Many adventurers use it as an acclimatization trek before attempting Kilimanjaro. With fewer crowds on the trail, the climb feels more peaceful and immersive.

The trek generally spans at least four days to ensure proper acclimatization and to enjoy the dramatic landscapes. Instead of tents, climbers rest in mountain huts along the route, adding comfort to the adventure. The park is home to abundant wildlife like elephants, giraffes, and buffalo, which hikers may spot along the way.

The best months to climb Mount Meru are June through February. November can be rainy, while December to February typically offers the clearest conditions. Meru is a dormant volcano shaped by a massive eruption over half a million years ago, featuring a 1,500-meter-deep crater and a summit perched on its western rim.

Reaching the summit requires good physical conditioning, though only basic scrambling is needed near the top. The 3,170-meter elevation gain makes it ideal for those preparing to scale Kilimanjaro.

The Momella Route is the primary trail, beginning at Momella Gate on the mountain’s eastern side. Climbers start through open savannah and lush rainforest, eventually entering volcanic terrain as the summit nears. Hikers stay at Miriakamba Hut and later push through thick forest and shrubland.

In the final stretch, trekkers pass Little Meru and Rhino Point before completing a final scramble to the western crater rim and the highest point. From the summit, expansive views—including a breathtaking look at Kilimanjaro—reward every climber and make the journey unforgettable.
