Experience one of nature’s most breathtaking events — a Wildebeest Calving Safari — as you journey to the Ndutu Plains in the Southern Serengeti during the peak breeding and birthing period of the Great Migration herds.
Seasonal Departure (January–March)
This safari is specially timed for the calving season, when the enormous wildebeest herds reach the southernmost point of their migration between February and March. It is undeniably one of the best times to witness this remarkable phenomenon, as the animals gather on the vast open plains of the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region, where more than 8,000 calves are born every single day.
With Hedsa Adventures, you’ll explore in custom-built 4×4 safari vehicles equipped with open roofs for optimal game viewing. This is a shared small-group safari with a maximum of six travellers per vehicle — each guaranteed a window seat. Over the course of eight days, your journey includes meals, comfortable accommodation, park fees, and visits to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Ngorongoro Crater.

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania. After completing customs formalities, meet your Hedsa Adventures driver, who will be holding a sign with your name. Your driver will then transfer you to Green Mountain View Lodge or a similar hotel on the outskirts of Arusha.
This morning, embark on a drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Nestled against the dramatic escarpment of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park features lush groundwater forests and a mix of ecosystems including acacia woodlands, grassy plains, swampy fan deltas, and, of course, the expansive lake itself. This rich diversity attracts a wide array of wildlife, from mammals and birds to other fascinating species. The park is famous for its rare tree-climbing lions and offers excellent game viewing with buffalo, impala, giraffe, bushbuck, waterbuck, hippos, and numerous elephants near the lakeshore. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, and the lively troops of Olive baboons. Overnight stay at Omega View Lodge or a similar hotel, with lunch, dinner, and breakfast included.
After breakfast, embark on a drive to Serengeti National Park. The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai language, meaning “endless plain.” On the way, you can choose to visit a Maasai Village, an ideal spot to experience Maasai culture and even take part in some traditional tribal activities. Alternatively, you could stop at Olduvai Gorge, famously known as the Cradle of Humanity; its museum showcases the remarkable journey of humankind from its early beginnings in East Africa to becoming the dominant species on Earth. Enjoy a thrilling game drive as you make your way to the camp. Overnight stay at Serengeti Heritage Luxury Tented Camp (including breakfast, lunch, and dinner).
Spend a relaxing day in the Serengeti with thrilling game drives, a landscape celebrated for its stunning beauty and as the home of the Great Wildebeest Migration. Vast herds of plains animals, including wildebeest, zebra, and antelope, roam the park, while lions, cheetahs, and other predators can often be spotted among the scattered kopjes. The terrain changes from open grasslands in the south, acacia-dotted savannas in the centre, hilly wooded grasslands in the north, to expansive woodlands and black clay plains in the west. Overnight stay at Serengeti Heritage Camp (includes lunch, dinner, and breakfast).
Start your day with an exciting morning game drive in the Serengeti, then transfer to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, located within the southern Serengeti ecosystem. Between December and April, the short-grass plains usually host large numbers of the wildebeest migration. The area is also home to abundant elephants, birds, and resident wildlife. Arrive at the lodge and enjoy an afternoon game drive. Overnight stay at Ngorongoro Wild Camp (including lunch, dinner, and breakfast).
Spend a full day on a game drive in the Ndutu region. Discover a variety of habitats, from swamps and woodlands to soda lakes and the iconic Serengeti short-grass plains. Witness impressive herds of wildebeest and zebras, as this is the peak season for wildebeest calving. Predator activity is at its highest, making it an exceptional time to observe wildlife in abundance. Newborn wildebeest calves can run within minutes and are usually strong enough to keep pace with the herd within three days. The marshes and lakes attract a rich diversity of birdlife and are home to resident lion prides. Cheetahs are frequently seen on the plains, while the wooded ridges remain consistently rewarding for wildlife sightings. Overnight stay at Ngorongoro Wild Camp, including lunch, dinner, and breakfast.
This morning, embark on a thrilling descent to the floor of Ngorongoro Crater for an exciting game drive and exploration. Measuring 600 meters deep, 16 kilometers across, and covering 265 square kilometers, the crater offers breathtaking scenery and unparalleled wildlife viewing, often hailed as the eighth wonder of the world. Spot some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhinos grazing the open grasslands, alongside the 20,000 large animals that call the crater home, including lions, cheetahs, elands, zebras, and gazelles. Keep an eye out for flamingos and other bird species at Makat Soda Lake. In the afternoon, return to your lodge for a relaxing overnight stay. Overnight at Omega View Lodge (including lunch, dinner, and breakfast).
After breakfast, set off from Omega View Lodge and drive approximately 1.5 hours to Tarangire National Park. Witness massive herds of wildebeest, zebras, elephants, elands, and oryx that gather here until the rains arrive. In the late evening, return to Green Mountain View Lodge or a similar bed and breakfast.
